Is it Possible to Make Money With a Website Using an Online Advertising Network?

Oct 13th, 2008 | By SistaWAHMs | Category: Featured Article, Free Money Tactics to Start a Business Online

An online acquaintance and father of two from Singapore was chatting with me the other day about how to make money with a website in an automated fashion.

Automation, he said, was the best way for him to go because he doesn’t like the hassles of maintaining a shopping cart and autoresponder (mailing list) for his business.  “It’s too much work and easily gets out of hand when it gets too big,” he said.

Because he has small children he wants to spend his time with them and work as least as possible. He said himself - isn’t that what working at home is all about, spending more time doing the things you love?

What he aims for in his online business is a one-time project that will continuously pay him even after his job is done.   To him, there’s just not enough hours in the day or time in life to put it all towards working, working, and more working.

Ensuring his business is on complete autopilot means no worrying about intensive marketing to individual prospects, fulfilling orders, handling complaints, hiring help or other tedious business tasks.

During our chat, he sent me some of his payment invoices which were very impressive - to say the least. I got to thinking…what in the world is this guy doing online in Singapore to be getting checks like this and on autopilot?

So I asked him how to make money with a website.  From there he went on to explain where his invoices came from and how he continues to make more and more everyday from work that he did months ago.

So, what is it that allows him to enjoy his family and make money for them on complete autopilot?

Three words: Online advertising network.

He’s joined as a publisher or affiliate of various advertising networks which provide him with the clients and the targeted advertisements which he places on his prime real-estate - his websites.  He in return gets to make revenue in exchange for traffic to the networks.

You too can follow this same method and receive checks without doing anything more than copy and pasting the code that makes the advertising show up on your website.

All you will need is your own website, articles targeted to your market and an account with an advertising network.

The amount of revenue you can make is really a numbers game - the more relevant ads displayed on your website for your visitors the more money you can make.

Some of the better advertising agencies will give you a mixture of revenue streams. There’s CPC, CPM, and CPA:

CPC (cost per click), pays you when a visitor on your site clicks on a banner and goes through to an advertisers website.

CPM (cost per 1000 impressions - where M is the roman numeral for 1000), pays per one thousand visitor views.

CPA (cost per action) pays when your visitor clicks on a banner, goes to the advertisers website, and either purchases the product or joins as a lead - someone who’s expressed interest in the product or service.  CPA has the highest potential payout but usually has lower conversion rates.

Aside from being paid on a CPC, CPM, CPA basis, you also have the ability to get paid a percentage of any referrals/affiliates, or advertisers to the network that come from your website.

A few website revenue generating agencies you can consider are:

Google Adsense

google.com/adsense

What it does - Displays text, image, or video ads based on your sites content.

What’s cool - They have a huge pool of advertisers that allow you to gain above average payouts. Because of its smart technology you have the ability to block competitors from advertising on your site by blacklisting their websites.

Drawbacks - Because advertisements are based on your sites contents, there’s a chance advertisements may compete with the goods or services you supply.  Since Google adsense is everywhere and internet users are used to seeing them, they also tend to get ignored.

Potential pay - Although Google doesn’t display what percentage of the clicks you’re paid, adsense publishers have reported making anywhere from 5 cents to 15 cents per click.  It just depends on the content in the advertisement and what the advertiser pays.

Clicksor

clicksor.com

What it does - Adds dynamic (DHTML) highlighting to the various text on your website. (The small advertising box that pops up when you hoover over a link).

What’s cool -  They are the current leader of the small publisher Adsense competition.  They offer multiple formats such as: text links, image ads, flash ads, animation ads, banners, pop unders, and dynamic (DHTML) highlighting.  The biggest advantage for you is the fact that their ads are truly context sensitive.  You can provide keywords but they also have technology that will show ads targeted to your sites content.  This saves you from having to decide in advance what people might be searching for.  They also do not require your social security (SSN) or Individual Tax Identity Numbers (ITIN) to join.

Drawbacks - While not requiring SSN or ITIN is beneficial to non US citizens, it does not help US site owners with their tax liabilities.  Participating sites must have 5,000 page views per day or 15,000 page views per month. Sites must be in English written content. The dynamic (DHTML) highlighting advertisements tend to load slowly potentially causing visitors to not wait until it is fully loaded.  Users of Clicksor are unsure if Clicksor can be used in conjunction with Google adsense because of Google’s TOS (Terms of Service).  And Clicksor tends to concentrate more on benefits of the affiliate program rather than pay per click products.

Potential pay -  Payouts are up to a market leading 85% and unlike other alternatives the cost per click bid value is high enough that you can earn a decent income. They have two-tier 10% earnings for people joining as advertisers or publishers. The profits shared with affiliates are reportedly up to 60% of the income.

Adbrite

adbrite.com

What it does - Allows you display text ads, and banner ads as well as full page ads - ads that briefly take over an entire page of your website.

What’s cool - It has an advertisement creating program which allows you to make your ads look any way you want - horizontal or vertical, with any amount of adverts shown and any color. They provide an easy to follow guide that takes you step by step through how to create the advertisements.  A certain amount of visitors coming to your site in order to join isn’t necessary.  As a member you get to decide when you want to cash out plus set your own threshold amount.  You can approve or ban advertisements before they appear on your site, and you can add an “advertise your site here” button to give other advertisers or site visitors the ability to advertise on your website.  They offer many formats such as: text, banner, full page ads, britepic, inline, and invideo.

Drawbacks - In order to have total control over what ads show up on your site, you’ll spend a few minutes each day approving or banning advertisements.  The full page ads cover the entire page of your website and could actually confuse the visitor on what it is and how to get it off.

Potential Pay - Pay depends on traffic and the type of ad being displayed.  Per 1,000 views you can expect 10 cents to $10.

Value Click

valuclick.com

What it does - Place national advertising banner ads on you site.

What’s cool - You may not have to compete with the advertisements displayed because they serve up one of the largest pools of known brand markets such as Netflix and Ebay.  You also get paid small commissions every time actions such as filing out a form or purchasing a product occurs through clicks from advertisements on your site with a separate service called Commission Junction.  You can also ban or approve specific advertisements.

Drawbacks - Banner advertisements may distract visitors or conflict with your sites design because of the flashing graphics.

Potential Pay - Around 25 cents to $2 for every 1,000 advertisement views.

These are just a few of the agencies available online, doing a Google search will return many others.

When choosing your online advertising network, pay special attention to the terms and conditions. This industry has been known for it’s share of fraud so you’ll want to look for an agency that takes fraud seriously. Breaking terms and conditions can lead to termination of your account and loss of revenue that you have earned.

Text link and banner advertisements is not all that’s available for additional revenue to be generated by your website. Next in our series we will be covering how to make money with a website for free using video and audio services.
